4th International Conference on Love and Tolerance “Countering Violent Extremism

Background

Ufuk Dialogue is a non-profit organization geared towards the promotion of dialogue and a culture of co-existence. Ufuk Dialogue is mainly concerned with the opinions and information exchange between ethnic, cultural, religious and ideological entities in order to nurture mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence. Its purpose is to contribute to peaceful coexistence and dialogue by bringing together intellectuals from all political spectrums with different cultural, religious, ethnic and ideological backgrounds from a multi-disciplinary perspective.

Ufuk Dialogue hosts conferences annually where people from different walks of life meet together to interact and discuss issues facing the world at large. This year, Ufuk Dialogue in partnership with Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), National Defence Academy (NDA), Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, National Council of Women’s Societies (NCWS), Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Daily Trust and The Government of Kaduna State has decided to organize a conference on the theme ‘Love and Tolerance: “Countering Violent Extremism”. Ufuk Dialogue believes that one of the global challenges that hinder understanding and acceptance is the lack of love and tolerance between people. As the primary aim of the Ufuk Dialogue is to encourage dialogue and togetherness, promoting and educating people about love and tolerance is a huge factor.

Objectives

The main objective of the conference is to create a platform for discussion among participants pointing out the necessity of personal introspection and social dialogue as well as interfaith or inter-ethnic dialogue for mutual understanding. It will also encourage participants to see dialogue as a first option and strive to understand the concept and relevance of love, tolerance and acceptance. Government officials, traditional and religious leaders and dignitaries from various ethnic groups, scholars and intellectuals, will attend the conference. The conference will bring together dignitaries with diverse backgrounds from across the nation.

By organising such a conference, Ufuk Dialogue, IPCR, ECOWAS, NDA, NCWS, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, Daily Trust, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports and The Government of Kaduna State will provide a ground for networking and experience-sharing for participants where they will be able to express their views, and exchange policy relevant views on the chosen topic. Civil entities are provided the opportunity to voice their views through dialogue, thus, promoting nationwide cooperation among these entities and contribute to making a future vision of tolerance and love for personal and social development.
